In-plane X-ray diffraction from monolayers of perfluorinated fatty acids: evidence for azimuthal ordering in the condensed phase

چکیده
We report the results of new grazing incidence X-ray diffraction studies of Langmuir monolayers of F(CF~)jjCOOH and F(CF~)jOCH~COOH supported on water in each case the locations and intensities of the first three diffraction peaks ((1, 0), (1, 1) and (2, 0)) have been measured. These new data are consistent with earlier ones in that both monolayers have simple hexagonal packing of molecules with their long axes nearly perpendicular to the water surface at maximum surface densities. By comparing the ratios of the intensities of the several diffraction peaks observed in each case, one can conclude that at least one of the molecules is not in a free rotator phase. These ratios are used, together with a fit to the Debye-Waller factor, to discriminate between different models of the azimuthal ordering in the monolayer. A model of close packed monolayer with freely rotating molecules is inconsistent with the integrated diffraction intensities for F(CF2)1ICOOH. Much better agreement is obtained when an orientational ordering of the long axes of the amphiphilic molecules is assumed in the monolayer. On the other hand, in the case of F(CF2)IOCH~COOH, either of the two models, free rotating or azimuthal ordering,

Evidence for Kosterlitz-Thouless-type orientational ordering of CF3Br monolayers physisorbed on graphite
Monolayers of the halomethane CF3Br adsorbed on graphite have been investigated by x-ray diffraction. The layers crystallize in a commensurate triangular lattice. On cooling they approach a three-sublattice antiferroelectric pattern of the in-plane components of the dipole moments. The ordering is not consistent with a conventional phase transition, but points to Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior. I...

Studies of phenomena such as charge, orbital and spin ordering in manganite has attracted much interest in recent years. These studies have been possible from an experimental point of view by the third generation synchrotron sources. X-ray with high flux density, tunable energy and polarization can be produced in synchrotron sources. Experiments have shown a resonant in peak intensity originat...
متن کاملPacking of ganglioside-phospholipid monolayers: an x-ray diffraction and reflectivity study.
Using synchrotron grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXD) and reflectivity, the in-plane and out-of-plane structure of mixed ganglioside-phospholipid monolayers was investigated at the air-water interface. Mixed monolayers of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 100 mol% ganglioside GM(1) and the phospholipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) were studied in the solid phase at 23 degrees C and a surfa...
متن کاملSurface ordering of a perfluorinated, self-assembled, dendrimer on a water subphase.
We have investigated the surface ordering of a synthetic, asymmetric, fan-shaped dendrimer containing a carboxyl core and perfluorinated tails which was obtained by the esterification of the intermediary. X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show the molecules self-assemble into a hexagonal, cylindrical mesophase. Surface pressure-area isotherms and Brews...

The application of Inconel 713C is very vast in different industries such as in automobiles, aircrafts, boilers and turbines. In this paper, Inconel 713C specimens were solutionized at 1000 and 1200 °C for 1 hours in order to study changes in phases and the structure of alloy to modify the γ' phase. The optical and the scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the structure and the ...
